GUIDE
How to prepare for a plumbing visit
Give a plumber a clear description of the problem, the affected fixtures, and the access available before arranging a visit.
Describe what you have noticed
Write down which fixture is affected, when the problem began, and whether it happens constantly or intermittently. Mention recent work or changes you have noticed without assuming the cause. A description such as “the kitchen faucet drips after it is turned off” gives a clearer starting point than “the plumbing is broken.”
Take photographs from an accessible position if they help explain the issue. Keep any previous invoices or product details nearby. This guide is for planning a routine visit; it is not a diagnosis or emergency response guide.
Explain access and scheduling
Tell the provider whether the property is occupied, who will meet them, and how to reach the affected area. Mention parking restrictions, stairs, pets, and any building access arrangements. If you rent, establish who is arranging and authorizing the visit before booking.
Ask what you should move before the appointment and whether an initial inspection is needed before the repair can be priced. Avoid taking equipment apart merely to provide more information.
Clarify the proposed work
Ask whether the quote covers investigation, labor, parts, cleanup, and a return visit if a part must be ordered. Request an explanation of any work that cannot be priced until the provider has inspected the problem.
Agree on how additional work will be approved. Keep the written scope and final invoice together so you can see what was completed and which questions remain.
