Writing a clear brief for an electrical project

Organize the rooms, intended uses, and questions for your electrician without trying to design or diagnose the installation yourself.

Start with the result you want

Describe how you want to use the space. For example, identify the desk that needs convenient power or the room where you want different lighting. Distinguish a new installation from a problem with an existing fitting.

List each room separately and identify which requests are essential and which are optional. Photographs of accessible fittings and manufacturer information for proposed appliances can help the provider understand the brief.

Leave the technical assessment to the provider

Ask the electrician to assess feasibility, installation requirements, and any approvals or inspections relevant to the proposed work. Do not assume that a particular location or product can be installed simply because it appears in a photograph.

Keep your preparation to recording information and arranging access. Do not remove covers, expose wiring, or test electrical components to complete the brief.

Compare the scope and disruption

Ask what the price includes for fittings, installation, testing, cleanup, and any wall or ceiling repairs. Establish who supplies each item, and how changes to product choices would affect the quote.

Discuss appointment timing and any expected interruption to use of the space. Request a written record of agreed work and ask what documentation you will receive at completion.
